There’s no way around it — Portland is one of the premier destinations on the entire West Coast. Boasting some of the nation’s best wine, beer, pizza, and more, there’s a whole lot to love in the city of Portland. Whether Portland is your vacation spot or just a ‘jumping-off point for you to explore Oregon, the city is guaranteed to have something for everyone.

Portland is perhaps Oregon’s most famous city and destination, but it also serves as a gateway to the natural splendor and charming small towns that define the northwestern state. Cities like Hood River and Bend have consistently ranked on America’s Top Small City lists for their natural beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities, and vibrant communities.

Oregon is an ideal summertime vacation spot for those looking to escape suffocating heat and humidity, city life, or for those adventure seekers ready to hit trails, lakes, and rivers. Being in Oregon is a chance to slow down time, enjoy what life offers, and make memories. Whether you have never been here or never left, here are some of the countless ways to spend your time in the Beaver State.

Outdoor Activities

The wide variety of terrain and ecosystems offered in Oregon presents a chance for every outdoor enthusiast to discover best-in-class biking, fishing, hiking, camping, etc. Portland is known as the best city in the United States for biking with its blocked lanes and traffic re-directs, so even a quick weekend getaway will give you the chance to explore from the seat of a bike. Nike bikes are available all over town, or you can rent mountain bikes and race down the myriad trails.

Winter Recreation

Winter snow and cold aren’t for everyone! But, if you love to hit the slopes or cross-country ski your way across inspired, jaw-dropping terrain, don’t miss Oregon in the colder months. Mt. Hood is a popular wintertime destination. It can give you a chance to get as extreme or relaxed as you want. Oregon has many snow parks, and you can even try out less conventional winter activities like fat-bike snow rides and cosmic tubing. Sports

Sports fans won’t be disappointed in Portland, where you can watch the champion Trail Blazers play basketball. Also, you can check out the Timbers and their passionate, loud fans if soccer is more your speed. If golf is your sport, you will not be disappointed at Bandon Dunes, a golfer’s bucket list course. If interested in sporting events that don’t involve balls, the Oregon Rodeo Roundup is sure to be a good time. There’s no shortage of sports bars and shops as well, like Jasper’s Tavern, Hook Line n Sinker, and Sunriver Sports.

Skaters will enjoy Burnside Skate Park, and even the most diehard cyclists will find something new in Portland’s vibrant bike culture. Anglers of all ages can also “get their fix” in Portland, with miles of coastline creating abundant fishing opportunities.

Coastal Towns

The Oregon coast is renowned for its beauty. Temps hang around the ‘70s, which means you can soak up the sun without the oppressive heat. The coast offers several small towns, each with its own coastal vibes and charm. Cannon Beach and Pacific City are two popular spots for sandy beaches and haystack rocks. The Gorge is a world-class spot for windsurfing and wake-kiting. It is only an hour or so from the airport and is nestled along with the lovely small city of Hood River.

Culture, Arts and Music

The West Coast is the birthplace of counter culture, freethinkers, and modern muses. The indie scene in Portland has been thriving for decades. Its unique brand of personality is embodied in the slogan “Keep Portland Weird”.

Keep Portland Weird

Fun fact — Lowkel partnered store Music Millennium originated that phrase.

Strip clubs and tattoo parlors abound, but so do music and art. Music and art festivals are bountiful. You can find local bands in many bars and parks. The art adorns the sides of buildings and the inside of coffee shops. The feeling in the air is endless rebellion, dedication to authenticity, and the rejection of stuffy, outdated ideals.

Portland – The Silicon Forest

However, modern tech is also palpable. Portland is the home of Nike, Intel, The Boeing Co., Adidas, and others, earning the nickname “The Silicon Forest”. Portland is indeed a unique city that only offers more discoveries upon each subsequent visit; Portland will always keep you guessing, interested, amused, well-fed, and with a lively sense of adventure.
